Man dead after veering off Grand Parkway and ending up in retention pond, HCSO says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A man is dead after his SUV veered off the road and ended up upside down in a retention pond, according to Harris County officials.

The crash happened on Sunday afternoon near the Grand Parkway and Northcrest Drive, authorities said.

HCSO reported the 51-year-old was driving a Nissan Rogue when witnesses said he drifted off the Grand Parkway and eventually over an embankment into the water.

"It went airborne into the retention pond near the Amazon facility here," HCSO Sgt. Beau Beaty said at the scene.

Beaty added that first responders performed CPR on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators said traffic on the Grand Parkway has been restricted as they determine what led up to the deadly crash.

Precinct 4 officials first reported the driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely, but the Harris County Sheriff's Office later reported a man died as a result of the crash.
